Inspired by hojalata, a traditional tin embossing practice found throughout Latin American folk art, this workshop explores a hands-on approach to embossing using everyday materials. The process is adapted with foil to make it accessible, portable, and easy to continue at home.

Paper and pencil for sketching
Heavy-duty 36 gauge aluminum foil
Soft surface such as thick cardboard, mouse pad, or foam
Ballpoint pen, dull pencil, or wooden skewer
Painters Tape
Scissors (optional)

Process

1. Prepare your design:
Use a template or draw your own! Keep it simple as bold shapes and clean lines emboss more clearly and are easier to control.

2. Prepare the foil:
Cut a sheet of foil at 6”x6”. Edges may be sharp. Work carefully and tape edges if needed.

3. Set up your base:
Place the foil on the soft surface so the metal can press in without tearing. Tape the design on top of the foil for your final piece.

4. Emboss the lines:
Trace the design using a pen, pencil, or skewer. Use gentle, steady pressure. Repeat lines to deepen them.

5. Flip and shape:
Remove the paper template and keep the foil on the soft surface. Carefully flip it over. Push areas forward and add dimension.

6. Add details:
Press dots, lines, or patterns into the foil to create movement and detail. Wrinkles and imperfections add character.

7. Add color:
Add color as desired and experiment with different effects (optional).

8. Finish:
Remove tape, trim edges, and display. Pieces can be mounted, framed, gifted, or displayed as is.
